Mr. Music Man Speaks

Talk to John Woods about anything musical and he’s either been there or done it. John is Noosa Federation of the Arts’ next Afternoon Delight guest speaker, the first for 2015. Afternoon Delight is a bi-monthly series of talks by experts in their field, designed to delight and enhance our knowledge in most things cultural.

What tales John has to tell about his travels around the world. He has accompanied great singers, either in masterclasses or in recital, such as the Dames Joan Sutherland, Janet Baker, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, or Sir Peter Pears and Luigi Alva. Also, the current crop including Joan Rodgers, Amanda Roocroft, Simon Keenlyside, and in particular, Jane Eaglen.

John WoodsBorn in Stirling, Scotland he studied piano and bassoon at The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and won scholarships from The Scottish Arts Council and The Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust to specialise in piano accompaniment at The Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. He has since worked as a guest repetiteur at the R.N.C.M. and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In 1992 he joined the staff of The Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University as an accompanist and vocal coach, preparing many of its operas, including the brilliant Australian premiere of Britten’s “Billy Budd”, as part of the 1993 Brisbane Biennial Festival.

Not only, but also, John was Musical Associate for Granada Television. He has credits on a wide range of arts and drama programmes which include “The Dame Joan Hammond Masterclasses”, “Coronation Street”, “Sherlock Holmes” and “Lost Empires”, the eight-hour serialisation of the J.B. Priestley novel in which he worked with the late Sir Laurence Olivier. So, be prepared for a most entertaining afternoon.

During his talk John will be performing on a Schimmel 205T Recital Hall grand piano which responds beautifully to a master musician’s touch.

This Afternoon Delight will be held in the magnificent waterside home of Gwyneth Yuill and John Deshon who have been gracious enough to lend it to NFA for this fund-raising event. Funds raised are for the Dame Joan Sutherland Vocal Competition Award 2017.
